The shift: A growing class of consumer and enterprise AI agents is designed to work across applications rather than wait for users to open individual apps and perform each task manually.
Why it matters: As agents become more connected to email, calendars, payments and company systems, they can become more useful—but also more difficult to replace once workflows and data are deeply integrated.
For consumers: Permission controls, payment authority and easy revocation will matter as much as raw capability.
For businesses: The competitive question may shift from “Which app do we use?” to “Which agent becomes the operating layer across our apps?”
